IYDU Condemns the Electoral Fraud and Violence by the Regime of Alexander Lukashenko

The International Young Democrat Union (IYDU), global alliance of centre-right youth organisations, condemns the blatant electoral fraud and suppression of fundamental rights by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.

“The official results of the elections have nothing to do with the votes actually cast. This is one of the most absurd cases of electoral fraud we have seen in years,” says Bruno Kazuhiro, Chairman of IYDU.

The IYDU highlights the lack of international election observers, which make it impossible for the international community to determine the entire extent of the fraud committed. The evidence that is available, however, confirms that the election was neither free nor fair.

“It is clear that President Lukashenko no longer has a mandate to rule. The regime should refrain from the use of force against peaceful protesters and Lukashenko should leave his post,” says Juho Mäki-Lohiluoma, Deputy Chairman of IYDU.

As a result of the befrauded elections and crackdown on fundamental freedoms, the IYDU calls on the extension of targeted international sanctions against the Lukashenko regime.

“We stand in solidarity with the pro-democracy opposition and the people of Belarus, whose desire for freedom and democracy has been denied for far too long,” says Bruno Kazuhiro.
