IYDU Statement Regarding the Demolition of the National Theatre in Tirana, Albania

Amidst the demolition of the Albanian National Theatre, the International Young Democrat Union expresses its condemnation towards such action taken by Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Edi Rama has violated basic principles of cultural heritage conservation, dialogue and democratic respect towards the history of Albania with this authoritarian move. The socialist government in power commits a true attack towards the history of Albania and must have the condemnation of every democratic organization in the World.

Built between 1938 and 1939, the National Theatre was a remark for the Albanian people as a cultural place that became a place of anti-government protests against the demolition. Police forces under the command of the government have detained many protestors right before the demolition, which occurred during the night using bulldozers.

Such demolition represents the degeneration of democracy under Prime Minister Rama. The IYDU urges its members to support protests against this action.
